The Free Reads Scheme
TLC has helped hundreds of writers on to publication, but its main aim is to support writers developing their work and honing their writing craft through structured constructive feedback. Since 2001, TLC has been in receipt of funding from Arts Council England to extend its offer to those unable to pay the fees for its commercial services. The Free Reads Scheme is open to all writers resident in England through a range of partners. You can find a list of the partners operating in each region, as well as more fulsome information about the scheme, here.
Writing East Midlands is the the TLC Free Reads partner of the region, connecting low-income writers across Northamtonshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, and Nottinghamshire with feedback from professional writers and industry editors.
The Free Reads scheme particularly welcomes applications from writers belonging to groups currently under-represented in publishing including disabled writers, neurodivergent writers, Black, Asian, and Global Majority writers, and members of the LGBQT+ community.
How to apply
This year, we are accepting applications for standard free reads (you submit an extract of your creative writing for detailed editor feedback on the full extract) or applications for a submission package review (you receive feedback on your submission package to literary agents).
If you are applying for a standard free read, please submit 150 lines of poetry, 15,000 words of your novel (plus one-page synopsis) or up to 5,000 words of short stories (min. 2,000 words).
If you are applying for a submission package review, please enter a 'Dear Agent' cover letter, a one-page synopsis and the opening 8,000 words.
When entering their writing, applicants also have the option to additionally apply for a Power Hour career development coaching session with TLC Director Aki Schilz. Power Hours are limited, so even if your extract is accepted for a free read, you may not receive a Power Hour session also. You will have the option to opt in for consideration for the Power Hour coaching session when completing our application form.
In line with TLC's requirements, you will need to confirm that you are a low-income writer from the East Midlands who has not received a free read in the past 2 years.
If you are successful, Writing East Midlands will be in touch once the scheme closes to let you knowthat your extract will be sent to The Literary Consultancy. They will then match you with a suitable professional editor who will read your entire extract and write a one-page report on your writing. TLC will be back in contact with you in 4-6 weeks with your report.
If you would like to apply for the chance to receive a TLC report on your writing, please complete this form by Friday 5th December at 11.59 pm. Do get in touch with comms@writingeastmidlands.co.uk if you have any questions.
Please note that due to capacity reasons, Writing East Midlands is unable to read your full extract. We will read the first 2,000 words of prose and 40 lines for poetry and will make our judgements based on this writing. However, your matched Free Reads editor will read and assess your extract in its entirety.
Write for Pulse Issue No. 5
The next edition of Pulse launches in March 2026, and Writing East Midlands wants you to write for it! That’s right: We’re looking for a 500-word piece (or 30-line poem) to publish in both the print and digital copies of Issue No. 5.
Your submitted piece should respond to the themes raised in the latest edition, Writing the Truth, whether that’s through the medium of creative nonfiction, flash fiction or poetry. Tell us what you thought of your favourite article, what you think a writer’s responsibility is to the truth or what truths you aim to share in your writing. We want to know!
The successful writer will receive a commission of £50 for their piece. Enter your writing by 17th December 2025 at 11.59 pm for your chance to be considered.
Only one piece per writer can be submitted, so choose your entry wisely! If your writing is successful, we'll be in touch in the new year to let you know (and to ask for a short bio and appropriate headshot to publish alongside your work, as well as bank details to arrange your payment).
